So, here it is, Biohazard's infamous 1988 demo, aka "the racist demo". I have to say, finally getting the chance to check out these "controversial" songs years and years after first hearing all of the rumors about 'em, I don't see what the big deal is at all, and I find all of the "white power" allegations to be tremendously overblown. Besides the fact that it's kind of hard to swallow the notion that one of the most notable bands to have prominently fused hardcore/metal and hip-hop was at one point in time racist, not to mention the fact that one of their most prominent members (who handles 95% of the vocals on this demo) is Jewish, these songs—while immature—are very clearly exactly what the band says they are: Intended "to shock, be vague, and get your attention".
Now, the lyrics are hard as shit to understand throughout the demo, and ironically some of the most distinguishable lines are also the most contentious, but from what I can gauge the only track that could legitimately offend politically correct nerds would be "Money for the Unemployed", which could arguably contain some touchy comments about welfare. But what New York area hardcore band didn't have a song that hit on that type of subject matter back in the 80's (Agnostic Front, Antidote, etc.)? And let's not forget: These songs were recorded 17 years ago, so Biohazard was basically still a bunch of kids. Thus it's no great stretch to believe that some admittedly ridiculous and juvenile lyrical decisions were, in fact, strictly used for shock value.
Obviously a song title like "Master Race" is as easy a target as they come, and when the band says in an interview, "'Master Race' was a song about uniting all the underground kids, from punk, hardcore, metal, rap... street people— and rising up, like in 'The Warriors'," yeah, that's a bit of a copout. But at the same time, the fuckin' chorus does say, "Master race, in unity, Master race, it ought to be," which doesn't hold much weight one way or the other. And the above cited interview response does make more sense when you look at "America", easily the most controversial track on the demo due to the line, "We'll march across the world with American Nazi pride," because there's another line that states, "Come together as one, unite, the time has come for us to fight." And it's some of these other little tidbits that basically make it seem like the band was, in fact, talking about Americans—regardless of race—uniting together and being proud to be from this country or some such nonsense. So, yeah, it's extremely poor logic to try to correlate something like that with the word "Nazi", but whatever... like I said, they were kids. And hey, if they just wanted to create a stir, it worked, right?
I should point out that, yes, I am a Biohazard fan. I own all of their records and I defy anyone within my general age group to refute the fact that "Urban Discipline" is, on some level, an absolute classic. So to further my side of this argument, I'd cite that the lyrics to "Howard Beach", contrary to popular misinformation, are exactly the same on the demo as they are on the band's debut full-length: Frowning upon the way that the media manipulates information to incite racial tension when reporting events relating to urban violence—a far cry from any "white power" propaganda. And as for "Money for the Unemployed" and "Lying Coke Bitch"? I mean, come on... both songs are totally lighthearted, even bordering on coming across as somewhat hokey at times.
And that's the bottomline. Cheesy? Yes. Adolescent? Absolutely. Racist? Believe me, if I felt the evidence was there, I'd be the first one to admit it and say, "Man, that's fucked up." But I'm just not buyin' it. The entire frenzy surrounding this demo seems laughable now that I've actually been able to hear the material for myself. You make the call, but I'd have to see a complete lyric sheet to be convinced otherwise...
1. "Intro/Skinny Song"
2. "Master Race"
3. "Victory of Death"
4. "Howard Beach"
5. "Money for the Unemployed"
6. "Lying Coke Bitch"
7. "America"
8. "Panic Attack"
9. "Survival of the Fittest"
10. "Howard Beach Reprise"
11. "Outro/Skinny Song"
I might have to take some of these songs down within a couple of days to preserve my bandwidth, but I'll be sure to leave all of the otherwise unreleased tunes up for the usual 10 days or so, I just wanted to post the entire demo for those out there who are obsessive completists like myself. I also forgot to clean up the ID tags before I uploaded the mp3's, but I've only got access to dial-up right now so there's no way I'm gonna bother going through that mess again. Sorry!

I think Biohazard might have been the first really hardcore influenced band I paid any attention to back in the early nineties. To be honest, without ‘Urban Discipline’ I’d probably be still listening to straight metal as the copy of ‘Urban Discipline’ I bought came with a free copy of Sick Of It All’s ‘Just Look Around’.
I’m guessing there’s A LOT of people out there that are too embarassed to admit the influence of Biohazard on their own musical tastes.
By the way, am I right in thinking that Evan Seinfield (?) got a mispelled ‘Brooklyn’ tattoo across his stomach? Or was that someone else?

Ha, yeah, I remember fucking loving “Just Look Around” back in that same time period as well, both bands were getting more and more attention around then.
I think Evan has that tattoo but I had never heard anything about it being spelled incorrectly.
Oh, and yeah, I think anyone who is in their mid- to late-20’s that listens to hardcore and claims to have never liked Biohazard is lying their ass off!

I remember buying the first Biohazard Cd just because I saw their name on the “backing vocals” credits on the “One Voice” by Agnostic Front CD, not too mention their vocals on “3 Dead Gophers” by one of my favorite bands at the time MUCKY PUP! Their sound seriously changed my views on hardcore and the music i like. it captured a lot of the attitude, aggression, and groove that I still like to this day.
I still think that Danny’s drumming helped define the modern mid-tempo to mosh hardcore parts played these days. I can’t believe how good his drumming even is on this old stuff being how young he must have been. Were any of these guys in other bands prior to this?
I was fortunate enough to see these guys right before Urban Discipline came out and still have the flyer. Fuck, I have DOWN FOR LIFE tattooed across my stomach, i rock the hazard with pride.

haha in a weird way some of the vocals remind me of suicidal tendencies meets circle jerks. just a little anyway, here and there. especially on panic attack

urban discipline was the first biohazard CD i heard and it changed my life, no kidding. if it wasn’t for it, i’d still be listening to bon fuckin’ jovi. and anyone who now says they didn’t like it is a lying sonofabitch. anyways, this demo shit is awesome, and it’s a reminder of the “good ole days” when the band were still stand-up dudes, and not playing in ridiculous little bands like suicide city (check out the “crew” billy hangs with now, what a shame… http://www.suicidecity.com/images/suicidecity_3.jpg) or starring in porno flicks. thanks for posting this!

Chris why did you have to post a link to that Suicidecity. I wish i didnt see that. damn it man… ill just try to pretend it didnt happen.
6.1.2005 | By EMS / SA MOB
hehehe. be a man, dude, deal with it. and be grateful i didn’t post a link to their mp3’s. :p or pics of the up-and-coming porn star spyder jones (a.k.a. evan seinfeld). that would bring tears to your eyes, man. the dudes have sunken so low.

Sorry, I just don’t get Biohazard. These guys have sounded generic since day one and the tough guy act got stale right away. So many other bands did it sooner, smarter, and better.
And I’m not sure how anyone could listen to ‘America’ and not find it flat out racist. It is what it is…excuses or not, that’s some serious pro-nazi talk on there. As you said, kids make mistakes, no question, but at least own up to your mistakes.

i was going to art school in brooklyn with evan’s sister when urban discipline came out and it was huge. i also listened to rap at the time and loved how they incorporated that groove. thanks for posting the demo and bringing back tons of memories but musically i’m just not feeling it. i think evan is married to tera patrick now, all that tough guy posturing paid off in the end, hahaha.

I haven’t thought about this tape in years. To me it was better than the first LP (but it’s been awhile since I’ve heard them both). Yeah, there were some questionable lyrics but considering the source I didn’t take it to heart

Hi - I tried to e-mail but it says my default e-mail hasn’t been set up. My fiance is a huge Biohazard fan & has been looking for that demo forever to finish his collection I guess. Is there any way you can post those songs again so I can download them for him? Or anyone who can give them to me or tell me where to get them, please e-mail me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Thanks!

What’s up everyone..I’d like to compliment you all on the effort you put into something I made such a long time ago! Many of you are close…many are way off….here’s the deal
Biohazard made a demo years ago with Type O Negative’s keyboard player Josh..it was on Easter Sunday of 1988…damn..so long ago…We were four kids who didn’t give a fuck about anyone else but ourselves…didnt’ have plans to do anything more than get up and go to work the next day..we didn’t know if we would be alive the next day for that matter..we lived life each day for each day. That was it…we were fucked up on drugs..violent fucks…..I had a big herion problem…Evan coke…we were all drinkers..Bobby an Alcoholic…we were proud to “hang” with our own crowd in Brooklyn…never were part of the NYC hardcore scene, although we loved the bands, we were loners and proud of it…the dirty kids from Brooklyn….we were never “racists” ....we made songs to fuck with people…lyrics, although immature and mis-guided at the time, that made people go fuck, what the hell is that!!!????!!!????...and we kept that vibe with us for the rest of our “career”. Evan and Danny are proud jews so this bullshit always hurt us…being white power or racist or whatever….what the fuck…someone needs a life worth living!!!..... and with my new “crap” band Suicide City…and the crew I hang with….it’s art..we make music…seems like some people are becoming what our parents were…I rembember people saying the same shit about biohazard, hating when they didn’t understand it….if the world was comprised of a bunch of boring fucks with nothing better to do than to waste time talking about something that happened almost 20 years ago….I’d kill myself…it’s all about today, tomorrow…these things we control….
You know, I never wasted my time with crap like this before, always shrugged it off with “fuck em” but hey it’s morning and I’ve had alot of coffee before I head out on tour with Suicide City…so on that note I’ll leave you with this. When I die…I have alot to be proud of…and I will continue to make my name even more memorable! Thanx for your time, support and attention…and spellling my name right!
KINGS NEVER DIE

This demo is so fuckin’ funny to listen to - I just heard it now. I bought the self-titled Biohazard CD back in the early ‘90’s when it was on some label called Magnetic Air. I stil have th original copy. The drum sound is funny but fuck I loved it and still do. “Retribution” is just fucking great. The Urban Discipline album is probably just as awesome, but after that I really saw Biohazard sell out and was never really into many other albums other than No Holds Barred: Live in Europe.

I just came across this post and had to comment. I have been a biohazard fan since around 91. I have all of there cd’s but could never find the demo stuff. I have a few songs but not many. If this board is still up, can someone re-post the 88 demo? I would love to here it as a whole again. I never once thought of this band as racist or white power, and I listen to skrewdriver. Not for the message, I am the farthest thing from racist (My brother-in-law and nephew are black & my best friends are black) but for the music. If you listen to the music, it’s the best OI! you will find. Biohazard wanted to shock people back then, not stand for racist, nazism. Anyway, I listen to all kinds of music and biohazard changed my thought on hardcore. I have been down for 18 years so far, being 30 as of this post and i will always BE DOWN FOR LIFE!

If there’s anyone looking out for the demo - I’ve found it on torrent, it’s something called “Biohazard - Rarities”, some other rare stuff there that you might not have heard too , a great Negative Approach - Friend of Foe cover…
Demo sounds totally underground…but I guess, after listening to Biohazard for 15 years I was looking out for such a raw, uncontrolled, punk hardcore energy from this band. I don’t mind the lyrics - not much you can make out of them anyway…
