While I quite liked, "Mirrors", the last effort from Misery Signals, I really haven't listened to it very much at all since it was released, because their debut, "Of Malice and the Magnum Heart", was just so fucking good that I'd always prefer to listen to it instead (realistically, it'll always be their best, it's just a fact). That being said, "Controller", their brand new album (again on Ferret Music), seems to strike me as a hint more of a return to form of sorts—but without looking backwards, per se. Right off the bat the extremely intricate arrangements and technical riffing of their debut is there, complete with loads of energy and emotion, shifting effortlessly from chugging breakdowns and octave chords to totally incredible melodic attributes and loads of discordant textures with tons and tons of layering, creating all sorts of subtle little complexities. Some of the more spacey sounding textures and effects heard throughout "Mirrors" appear here as well, but they're far more restrained and well-integrated into the core sound the band developed on their debut, so they don't come across as stale or generic in any way, which is awesome. But they also push those types of influences further in a few areas, leaning towards a truly "progressive" sound with a number of bizarre yet gorgeous clean passages and weird little effects accents that almost touch a Cynic-esque level here and there (And that's pretty much never a band thing!). I know that a lot of people bitch and moan when bands of this nature switch it up with some singing vocals here and there, but there's barely any singing here, and I really like those vocals during the few instances that they do present themselves, so... shit, more of that down the road could prove quite interesting. And Devin Townsend's production job certainly doesn't hurt the overall impact. Everything sounds pretty god damn huge, but with a great sense of clarity that really lets the interplay between the various guitar and bass parts shine (Through some great panning, too!). Misery Signals has definitely been among the very top "metalcore" bands out there for that past 4+ years, and with this album they've certainly solidified their post right there as possibly the best still active band operating within this particular realm of the genre right now. You just don't hear this impressive level of musicianship and emotive songwriting quality together very often. Period.

Thanks for the review. Knowing hom much you liked their first album makes me want to get this one without listenning to much more than what I’ve already heard in the videos they made while they were recording it.

This clip was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. I gotta get this.

Great review.
I couldn’t get into this band until I saw them live. They were tight and played an amazing set that completely changed my opinion. Really good band for this genre…I’ll definitately be checking this one out.

I was underwhelmed by Mirrors but this is definitely a return to form (although I still don’t find this singer to be as engaging as Jesse was).

The music’s pretty great but this guy’s vocals do nothing for me.

That was an excellent review Andrew, and just about exactly how i feel about this band. Their first full-length is far and away the best, but looking back on Mirrors, something was just missing. Evidently whatever it was is in this album because i really really like this thing.

Not bad. I’ve heard of these guys before, but that’s about it (like most of the stuff you post here). If this song is any indication of what else they have to offer, I may have another band to add to my collection at some time.

All check The Banner: Frailty on the same label!!!

i too find the vocals somewhat bland and unengaging. annoying, even.
good, but made me pull out twelve tribes’ “the rebirth of tragedy”.

so weird i definitely like mirrors way better than this album or malice. mirrors didnt rely on the stereotypical chugga chug that malice and controller do and actually felt like something new was being done with the genre. but i guess thats just me.

Maybe I just need to listen to it a few more times, but this album does nothing for me and the vocals don’t really help. I don’t know if it’s the same guy that was on Mirrors but the vocals on that record seemed more dynamic than they do on Controller.

I have hated everything this band has done, but for some reason something clicked with “Controller.” I LOVE LOVE LOVE the vocals - one of my favorite parts about this release. Everything is just… on!! It’s got that melodic hardcore feel, but the vocals almost give it this tough-guy sort of sound. I really dig it, although the sticker on the CD case was highly misleading…
“For fans of: Tool and Thrice.”
Hahaha.

“For fans of: Tool and Thrice.” Really!? Pathetic! That must be the lamest and most inaccurate - to the point of being borderline dishonest - promotional sticker ever. Absolutely ridiculous!

It is Ferret Records… you can’t expect much better from them, I do suppose.

i’ve read some reviews of this basically slagging it but whatever.
i fucking love both Of Malice… and Mirrors. they definitely strike that perfect balance between playing and thinking, as well as the aggression and the emotion. it always puzzled me why they didn’t just return to Devin Townsend for Mirrors and i was initially thrown off by the lack of that whole big delay/reverb (head) space the majority of his recordings tend to have and/or put you in, but after numerous listen i found myself, or my ears adapting. have yet to get this but everything i’ve heard so far sounds phenomenal - MS doing what they do best.

[...] that Misery Signals released on Ferret Music a couple of weeks ago — but why bother when Aversionline elegantly summed up everything I had to say? In short, it’s surprisingly good progressive [...]

i finally got my hands on this new disc and just as suspected they kill it once again. this shit just reeks of quality.
i do find the Devin Townsend thing (as mentioned in my comment above) alittle tiring on the ears though (moreso on here than on Of Malice…) as it never let’s up (another needed dynamic element) which is my only real complaint.
