Dew-Scented "Impact" CD
[Nuclear Blast]
As with almost every other review you'll read regarding this German band, I refuse to refrain from once again pointing out exactly how moronic their band name is. I cannot imagine what would drive an aggressive retro thrash styled band to name themselves Dew-Scented, nor anything else that involves the words "dew" or "scent" in any way, but make no mistake: Despite the fact that the cheesy name would have you envisioning a bunch of girly goth metallers with lots of makeup and synths, this is in fact a band that plays fast thrash metal with a late-80's sort of feel. It's nothing new or overly exciting, but hell, unlike most bands of this nature they do play guitar solos, which is a welcome fucking change. It's pretty straightforward material, there's a good mix of tempos, a little bit of melody here and there, songs that generally run from three to five minutes... all that. They do a cover of Turbonegro's "Hobbit Motherfuckers" as a bonus track, which is a major surprise, but it's cool... a lot different than the other tracks of course, but still fucking good. The recording isn't bad, but the drums are way too rigid and flimsy. I could probably deal with it if the drums and vocals weren't a little dominant in the mix, but the guitar tone is awesome. I can't really make out the bass that much, but guitars are the most important, so that's in check. The guitars need to have more room to breathe, but the drums are absolutely the biggest culprit. At least things sound professional, despite the faults. The artwork concept of two dudes with ram horns bashing into each other is also dumb as hell, but at least they pull it off with a good color scheme and a decent sense of texture and whatnot. It's a silly idea, but it looks presentable. The lyrics are nonsense to me, pain, hell, rage, blah, blah... but I don't care about the lyrics here anyway, so fuck it. In the end it's not the most memorable batch of songs I've ever heard, but it is performed in the true spirit of thrash, even vocally, so I'm all for it. Take what you can get in this day and age folks... and this ain't bad. (7/10)
