Autumn formed in Pennsylvania in 1994 from the remnants of a straightedge band called Forethought and played a fairly east coast sounding brand of metallic emo/screamo hardcore stuff that actually reminds me (musically, though somewhat vocally as well) of a couple of bands from my area around that general time period. Of course, as with many such bands in this realm of the hardcore scene, the vocals are pretty damn shaky and definitely take some getting used to. But the riffs... I mean, some of these riffs are fucking amazing, and dissonant shit like the intro to "The Nameless" (or the "chorus" about 37 seconds into "My Eternity", for that matter) is the kind of stuff that I go nuts over, so it's really a shame that there are just so few bands around these days that still capture that particular style.
This 7", "Wire Hangers", came out in 1995 as a split release between Seven One Seven and Nevermore Records, and according to the insert the four tracks were originally slated to appear on a nine-song CD that was never released. They had done a demo prior to this EP, and went on to release a four-song CD EP on Crisis Records, not to mention the obligatory handful of compilation appearances. I'm not sure if the five leftover songs from the unreleased CD were doled out to the comps or not. Oh, and as you can see above, also similar to many other 90's bands, these dudes had terrible taste in visual aesthetics, resulting in what is undoubtedly one of the lamest record covers in the history of hardcore. Oh well. I personally think the music makes up for it:
1. "My Eternity"
2. "Every Day I Live"
3. "The Nameless"
4. "Wrong"
This one's out of print, of course, but you could probably find it on trade lists or something if you wanted, as I imagine there are plenty of people out there who couldn't get past those vocals. Here's their track from "The Tie That Binds" compilation in 1996 just for the hell of it:

I got to admit…I couldn’t get past those vocals.
The music is decent…but sweet merciful crap…that guy could make even the most amazing band sound horrible.

I LOVED THIS BAND so much that I wanted to use them for my blog. It was bands like this with the unique vocals and post hardcore style that make me wish it was 1995 all over again. What happened to this style? Bands like Man Will Surrender, Shift, Understand…maybe I am getting old.

I always wanted to like Man Will Surrender but I had a couple CD’s and they only had like 3 really good songs out of everything I had, the rest was boring. Shift was impeccable, though. I fucking loved that band from day one straight to the end. It’s a shame it seems Big Collapse has gone under as well, because “Prototype” was some of Josh Loucka’s most brilliant work. That guy is fuckin’ great.

I never heard this record from them but I used to have a record by Autumn and the name escapes me right now but there was this one song called ‘Rain in Winter’ that was really awesome. Any ideas?

Vocals aren’t as bad as I expected. I’m diggin this, thanks!

Yeah, “Rain in Winter” is on the Crisis Records CD EP that they did.

ha! wish i saw this earlier! these dudes were my friends and i booked them a few times at the shows i put on in Princeton. they were decent live and i enjoyed the 7” a bunch too. i have the Forethought 7” i could rip for your blog. for any vinyl nerds, there were two pressings of the Autumn 7”. my memory sucks, but i believe there was a grey swirl 1st press and a green marble for the 2nd press… both limited to 150 or so and two different color covers: grey + tan. i also know there was a 2 song 7” that was pressed, but i believe amost every one was destroyed. i have one, but it’s warped to shit as i think all were warped, hence why they were never sold. finally, george, the singer is doing a new band now based out of philly (i’ll have to find the name) with some older HC guys i believe and Rich, the guitar player, was in a band called Captain Pecker and the Party Wreckers based in Morrisville/ Philly. i’m not sure if they’re still around, but they were pretty much beer fueled punk rock. a lot of fun live.

i had my doubts when i first heard this 7” courtesy of a friend of mine…but when i saw them live in albany it was a totally different feeling. since that set…they were one of my top bands (even though I thought the Revelation EP was pretty lame). Wish they had a chance to release a full length and the 2 song 7” (name escapes me at the moment but contains the track “59”) are two of the best songs i’ve ever heard. Good choice.

Thanks for these. If anyone has any rips of the Forethought demo & 7”, the Autumn demo and the first 7”. please tell me/us!
Ps. I saw that 7” on Ebay and I was like, “dude this must be awesome”. Ha.

I stumbled on this site by accident while I was looking for some old photos for a Myspace page. i was in this band from 1995-1997 during the Crisis years. For those interested, the Crisis E.P. was supposed to be a full-length. It was actually supposed to be:
Glass, Bound and Gagged
Rain In Winter
Smirkface
Perfect Surface (Reworked and different than the one releases on the Rob Cornato comp)
59/Coin Toss
The Whole Picture
Final Dream (Remixed from an older session)
What happened was that the record was supposed to come out on Revelation. They signed us and Jordan gave us the run-around and put us on Crisis as a proving ground of sorts. The record was already about a year old before it saw the light of day. By the time it was ready to come out we decided to whittle it down to four songs for reasons that escape me now, but really because I thought we were just so tired of the damned thing. The record came out with little fanfare and even less promotion. On the way to play the CMJ show at the Wetlands, our van broke down (lovingly referred to as the ‘A’ Bomb) and we got there when, and forgive me if this isn’t 100%, Ignite was playing. They asked us if we wanted to be the last band and follow Ignite, but since there was already a rumor of a Quicksand reunion at this showcase brewing, we decided it was best to just not play. Oh, and to break-up. We fulfilled a few commitments and on one fateful day in which the month escapes me, we played one of our most memorable shows at The Stalag in Philly with all of our friends. It was bittersweet. We always had a tough time in Philly, but this was sort of a redemption show. I always felt that when we were ‘on’ we were great live, but when we were ‘off’ it was pathetic. That last night, we were on.
The two song seven-inch that people have been referring to was called A Light in the Attic (I think). George put it out posthumous with his own money to get the songs released. They were 59 which we took off of Coin Toss which it was originally tied to, and The Whole Picture-both originally recorded for the full length. In fact, the only two songs that were never released from that session is the much improved Perfect Surface, and a noisy response to the Philly drama that led into Perfect Surface.
So there you go…everything you never wanted to know about Autumn. Thanks for your posts…the good, the bad and the ugly.

Revelation… I would’ve probably never heard of you guys if you were “signed” on Revelation.

Heard these guys on a comp. probably in like 96 maybe 97 that had Public Nuissance, Neck, The Krays and instantly feel in love with this bands with at that time to me was a very unique sound… Really need to get my hand on everything. I know of this 7” and an EP. DID they have anything else?

And there are also a handful of unreleased songs that were floating around online at some point.
