Review: Black Sand Desert “Blight” 3” CD

Here's a one-track disc (the first track in some sort of trilogy) that opens a little rawer than what I seem to remember having heard from the project in the past. After a little bit of stuttered mid-grade distortion, some thicker chunkiness comes in with wailing feedback breaking into the distance for a more interesting approach. Minutes later many of the layers drop out, allowing a chaotic, hollow sort of reverberated texture to whip back and forth to varying degrees of intensity and speed, slowly building back up with more grating distortion. The occasional loop will sink in here and there to create some rhythmic elements, but for the most part things sound pretty haphazard and improvisational - ever-changing very regularly with little sitting around in one place. Around 12 minutes in there's a little more of a low-end presence and the track gets a little smoother, which I like quite a lot. The piece carries on slightly stronger for its duration, with only a few textures creeping in that sort of irritate my ears a little much (granted the harshness of the distortion hovers at a very reasonably tolerable level, truth be told). If the entire track carried along more gradually like the latter eight minutes I'd be much more into it. As mentioned this is somewhat rawer than what I recall from the little I've heard of Black Sand Desert in past years. It sounds okay, though. A little wispy with midrange, and not quite as crisp or rounded out as I'd prefer, but effective for the most part. I think the content of the piece is more of an issues as far as being slightly uninteresting to me, whereas I don't hold anything against the recording at all. The 3" CD-R is housed in a small plastic sleeve with artwork that mirrors the typical Snip-Snip format of colored paper wrapped around a xerox with minimal text information, this one looking fairly good due to the muted color of the paper. It's mainly personal taste that keeps me from truly enjoying the sounds, however. I don't dislike it, but I'm pretty indifferent to it. I prefer things to be a little more atmospheric or something intentionally structured or developed, and there are only a few passages within this composition that flow in that manner, whereas some of other styles and tones exhibited simply aren't my thing.
