Song of the Day: The Blow Monkeys, “It Doesn't Have to be This Way,” from She Was Only a Grocer's Daughter (RCA, 1987)

It's perfectly logical to go from endorsing obscure, underground British noise to gushing over sort of a weirdly porny-sounding British pop tune that was featured in Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol (by a band called The Blow Monkeys, of all things), right?

Well, that's how I do it.

Apparently this was their biggest single (#5 in the UK), but it never charted here in the US for some reason, and I don't even really recall their lone American hit from when I was a kid.

"It Doesn't Have to be This Way" smokes that one, though. All those funky little guitar riffs bouncin' about with the strings... and the horns, man! I'm not saying they're "Baker Street"-level, or anything, but...

  1. I’ve included “Diggin’ Your Scene” on many playlists throughout the years. That song got some love in NYC when it came out in the ‘80s. I had never heard this song you wrote about. It’s great!
