Review: Brody’s Militia “The Appalachian Twelve Gauge Massacre” CD

Here's the long awaited debut full-length from these infamous Ohio bashers, dishing out 27 tracks of unapologetic hardcore/punk in a mere 24 minutes. You should know basically what to expect here: Generally fast hardcore/punk with an occasionally rocked out vibe or a couple of noisier tendencies, and a dual vocal attack of flat out yelling often delivered in speedy vocal patterns that match the music quite well. Sure, there are some sarcastic melodic riffs in "Sheep in Wolves' Clothing", but that's because the song's lashing out at shitty christian pop-punk and metalcore bands, so it makes sense, get it? There's not always a terribly large amount of differentiation between the songs here, but considering the band's ability to blaze through 27 tracks in less than a half-hour, there's not much room for sitting around and twiddling your thumbs here. "Fucked From the Get-Go" opens things up with a slower and slightly sludgier run before unloading the blinding pace welcomed throughout most of the disc, "Still Don't Give a Fuck" is a little more rocked out and basic (and rightly so), "Demonized" feels both a little more pissed and a little more memorable, "Geek Behind the Curtain" is another more straightforward number that has a catchier disposition, "A Moment of Silence" and "Daily Life of the Living Dead" both offer a back-to-back attack of blasting speeds that are definitely more intense and over the top than much of this material, the instrumental "Mossberg Boogie" hits on a few unexpected crossover metal riffs or something, the title track is killer blend of memorable midpaced power chords and explosive speeds, and then they close with a cover of the crunchy "Invader Number One Must Die" by Cocknoose. The recording's just a touch muddy, but I'm not complaining. I would like to hear the guitars given a hint more clarity, which would also allow the bass a little more room to move around on its own, but the drums and vocals sound great and overall this is an efficient listen for sure. The packaging is all done in black and white with some amusingly appropriate illustrations and a couple of band photos amidst all of the lyrics, which are pissed as hell. And don't expect any socio-political essays or "rebellious" soapbox diatribes here, my friends: Expect a lot more alcohol and a lot more sarcasm with that severe sense of bitterness and dissatisfaction. "Watch your mouth and curb your words, you might be overheard, No sense of humor, self righteous prick, your crusader gimmick gets old quick, Whose sins are you dying for? You're a stupid fucking pompous bore, I bet it's hard for you to ever laugh, living life with that stick up your ass..." Get the picture? I don't think I've ever been let down by this band and that sentiment still holds true. This is good stuff, and as long as you're not some ?ber PC "stupid fucking pompous bore" with stick planted firmly in ass (or one of the misguided jackasses that paints an inaccurate picture of these guys), if you like fast and pissed hardcore, you should like this. End of story.
