I knew absolutely nothing about Buzz Rodeo when they got in touch with us several weeks ago, other than:
- Their debut full-length, Sports, obviously shares its name with the 1983 Huey Lewis and the News classic.
- One of their labels, Whosbrain Records, has also been home to some other great and underrated bands such as Gentle Veincut and Joe 4.
These Germans may call themselves an "art-punk trio," but be not concerned, 'cause they sound more like Grade A noise rock to me: warm, spacious, natural recording; hard-hitting bass runs; skronky riffing; shouted/spoken vocals mixed deep in with the instruments; flawless song titles like "Pretty Lousy Bastard"... you can't lose with that winning combination!
Sports is available on limited edition LP or CD, each with a different 3D "sports" emblem on the cover, which is a really cool and unique touch. You'd have to be a "pretty lousy bastard" not to check this out, so stream or purchase via Bandcamp.

So good! I recall reading an interview with Page Hamilton about Helmet’s contribution to that 90s Led Zep tribute that spawned some radio hits (Helmet collaborated with David Yow on “Custard Pie”). Anyway, the gist of the comment was that it sure was nice to work with a ‘real singer’ - which was a funny comment because Yow’s yowling, angular approach to vocals would probably not be characterized as singing by most people. But he was right - Yow has that certain ‘something’, that perfect spark of creative expression for his chosen art-form. And this guy from Buzz Rodeo has that exact same thing. These guys are the real deal! Awesome find as usual, sir!
