This sludgy, rock-leaning, turning point album from C.O.C. just gets better and better with age. And its second-to-last track—a dark, country-tinged "ballad" (for lack of a better term) penned by Pepper Keenan, complete with pedal steel accompaniment—is at least atmospherically one of their heaviest compositions. I never quite think of "Shelter" as being one of their strongest songs—nor one of my favorites—but then every damn time it comes across the speakers it stops me dead in my tracks:
I'm no different than you, it's just that I do whatever I want to.
That's what sets us apart, I was free from the start...
I mean, whew... that's some Charles Manson outlaw shit right there. Powerful.
Maybe "Shelter" is one of their strongest songs...

I was just listening to this album today after hearing that they would be playing at the Desertfest next year and this song stuck with me in the same way. The lyrics and the melody form a perfect match that could make a whole crowd weep from its intensity.
