Song of the Day: Cro-Mags, “When Push Comes to Shove” (1984)

The other day, I randomly stumbled upon an old article about rare/unreleased NYHC recordings, the highlight of which—at least for me—was the mention of two Cro-Mags songs that I had never heard before: "When Push Comes to Shove" and "You'd be the Death of Me." They were apparently recorded with Don Fury in 1984, and first resurfaced as bonus tracks on a 2008 CD reissue of The Age of Quarrel (and later some vinyl editions), alongside an early version of "Hard Times."

"When Push Comes to Shove" immediately jumped out at me, as I giddily recognized that the track's music reemerged eight years later on Alpha - Omega, as the breakdown in "Eyes of Tomorrow" (which I have long described as one of the greatest breakdowns ever)!

I'm sure this does absolutely nothing to persuade haters of Alpha - Omega to perhaps consider admitting that there is anything of potential value to be heard on said album, but, hey... I thought the connection to this ancient demo recording was pretty cool.

Alpha - Omega still rules, too.

  1. Alpha-Omega is a mixed bag.  Some great songwriting, INCREDIBLE production, but some truly dated moments too.  I put this together in my spare time a while back, maybe people will get a kick out of it.

  3. Thanks!  also on my channel are the Civ voice crack megamix and Bulldoze studio mosh calls megamix.  I’ve been busy but I have other similar ideas lined up, Celtic Frost etc. I loved Aversionline, it’s great to see you writing here.

  4. Thanks, I really appreciate that. I’ll check your channel. I’ve seen the Bulldoze mix (another classic), but don’t recall the Civ one.
