I didn't know what to expect from this Smithtown, NY group when a tweet from Separated tipped me off to their new EP last week. Based on its dark cover art coupled with track titles like "Cripple You"—not to mention the fact that the recommendation was coming from a vicious metalcore band—for all I knew they were gonna sound like Stigmata or something.
Not even close!
In fact, expect a catchy and melodic sound more akin to Armor for Sleep meets In Between, which suits me absolutely fuckin' fine. It's no secret that I'm a major sucker for catchy, high-energy tunes, and this EP had me subconsciously playing a little air guitar on the first listen. An immediate perusal of the band's entire discography confirmed that they've stepped things up in a big way on No Shelter, too. Stronger songwriting, more powerful production, etc.
Though I find myself listening to less and less new music these days, I can't help but get excited about this release—which is free, by the way—and I'm damn sure hoping for bigger and better things to come from Discolor...
