Final Conflict “Ashes to Ashes” CD

Final Conflict - Ashes to AshesIt seems almost shockingly uncommon to come across mention of Final Conflict these days (there doesn't even seem to be that much out there on the net about 'em), perhaps because the California hardcore/punk act wasn't the most prolific band out there in their day, but whatever the case their debut LP is a classic slab of fast hardcore/punk with just a tinge of that early crossover metal edge. It might not be the most original thing you've ever heard, but there's no denying that there's a certain vibe to the material that sets the band apart, and a number of these songs are timeless standards to this day... so even if the band name's not familiar for some bizarre reason, I bet you've heard at least one of these tracks in one form or another over the years.

Aside from their 1985 demo and scattered compilation appearances, the mighty "Ashes to Ashes" LP (Pusmort, 1987) was the band's sole release during their first wave—cranking out 14 tracks in barely less than a half-hour. Original members Ron Martinez (vocals) and Jeff Harp (guitars) later reformed the band and did a couple of 7"s on Bacteria Sour during the mid-90's, then a split 7" and the "Rebirth" full-length in 1997—all of which was apparently fairly solid (I've only heard "Rebirth" myself, though I don't own it). I'm not exactly sure what became of them afterwards, I believe Harp may have continued alone with a few different lineups, but I was honestly never that interested in much beyond their mid- to late-80's outing.

Final Conflict "Apocalypse Now"
Final Conflict "Abolish Police"
Final Conflict "Constant Fear"

"Ashes to Ashes" has been reissued on CD (with bonus tracks) a couple of times over the years, and though I believe all versions are technically out of print, it's actually still pretty easy to come by, which is always a good thing:

Random aside: A 10-year-old Civ track suddenly popping up in a Nissan commercial? What the fuck!?

And hey, people, what's up with slacking on the comments, eh? 500+ downloads already this week and, what, one fucking comment? That's weak, folks. If you hate these songs, fair enough, but do me a god damn favor and let me know if you like the shit, alright? I hate feeling like I'm spinning my wheels for nothin' over here! And that goes for all of these other mp3 blogs out there, too. Don't just leech the tunes and take off, at least leave these cats some feedback from time to time! It's definitely appreciated, thanks.

  2. 3 things:

    1. I love this band and album, thanks for posting the tunes. Certainly a forerunner in the “Thrash Core” style. It’s becoming clear to me that you and I are much alike in our musical tastes…

    2. Thanks for sticking up for the other MP3 bloggers!! I know most people tend to just leech the songs, but it is nice to get feedback on shit and I agree with your sentiments here.

    3. WTF?!?! What fucking Civ song is in a commercial? I haven’t seen it yet and I’m glad - I’d probably go ballistic and annoy my company with rants on how fucked it is! I guess a bunch of kids have grown up and gotten advertising jobs, because this keeps happening!

  3. Jesse: I fucking LOVE Orange 9mm so I will absolutely be posting about them at some point.

Scott: Agreed on all counts!  As for Civ, it’s “Can’t Wait One Minute More” and I’ve heard it like a million times in some new Nissan commercial.  And I only have my TV on for like three hours a week, if that, so… it’s pretty well circulated!

  4. andrew, i download most of what you post, it’s just that i don’t feel like commenting if i don’t like a band that much. but don’t let the occasional lack of comments discourage you, i think the number of downloads speaks for itself. keep it up!

  5. I haven’t been too crazy about some of the stuff posted lately, but I still follow it and appreciate it every time.  Thanks!  Anyways, I’m happy to see Final Conflict on here.  I think they usually get lost (for me any ways) somewhere between Crucifix and Dr. Know.  I’d love to see more thrash posted on here, by the way.

  6. I personally have enjoyed everything post since Fly Machine. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Cynic post though, seeing how I have never heard anything by that band before.

the last song on the most recent reissue is taken from it, i believe its called “you never were” and its a real ripper.  thanks for highlighting an incredible band.  PS- they still ripped when they toured in 98 -jannes

  9. Hey Andrew- fist off I want to give you props for putting together this mp3 blog. I’ve been spending a lot of time tracking down older music and your site really keeps me informed. After your blog post on Handsome I picked up their s/t cd and must say it’s amazing stuff for us Quicksand fans. A shame that they were so short-lived.

I definitely enjoyed this Final Conflict   posting. They certainly were forerunners to the the crossover sound, but with the clear Cali punk sound. Has a bit of a d-beat quality to it as well. I’ll have to track this down at some point.

Thanks again for putting in the time to keep us audiophiles satisfied!

  12. Thanks for these Final Conflict tracks. I haven’t heard these guys in years. I saw them at a house party here in Victoria, Canada years back. Wild show! It degenerated into a huge brawl after these Nazi skins crashed the gig and I think flashed a gun. I was so busy trying not get my ass kicked or pepper sprayed by the cops, I hardly remember what the bands were like, but I sure remember the show!

  13. Nice! Once again, never heard of those guys before, but I very much like what I’m hearing hear.

  15. I’ve heard the name before. Thanks a lot for posting some MP3s. You’re completely right, there is something that sets these guys apart from the rest.

  16. ANDREW, WHAT’S THE NAME OF YOUR BAND AGAIN??? INSULTS ARE HUMEROUS,
AND CHILDISH. THREE LINES OF POSITIVE INFO. THEN ENDING EACH
FOLLOWED BY A NEGATIVE TO RUIN IT ALL. ESPECIALLY TOWARDS BANDS THAT
POUR THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO IT,
USUALLY AT THE COST OF A CONTENT
PERSONAL LIFE, FOR THE SAKE OF CHANGE IF ONLY A LITTLE,IN THE WORLD, RATHER THAN ACTING LIKE SOME ADOLESCENT ASS REVIEWING NEW
RELEASES FOR A CHUMP FANZINE JUST TO GET FREE SHIT, ALWAYS UNDER AN ASSUMED NAME.SO MY Q; IS “ANDREW”,
(BESIDES BEING A DICK) WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO IMPROVE THE WORLD AROUND YOU. I’M WILLING TO BET YOU
YOU DON’T CARE. WHY DID BOTHER,IF YOU WERE GOING TO HALF ASS IT?
    YOURS TRULY “HARP” FROM “F.C.”
