Song of the Day: Hobbs' Angel of Death, “Satan's Crusade,” from Hobbs' Angel of Death (Steamhammer, 1988)

I used to see the name Hobbs' Angel of Death pop up online in various discussions here and there, but I had no idea the band was the solo project of former Tyrus guitarist/vocalist Peter Hobbs. Therefore, I just thought it was a weird (and, kinda goofy) looking band name, and never bothered to check 'em out until many years later.

But the Aussies' self-titled debut—also featuring Hobbs on guitar and vocals—is actually a surprisingly solid outing of aggressive, in your face thrash. The breakdown at 2:20 of "Satan's Crusade" is totally crushing, and has always jumped out at me as one of the album's highlight moments.

The lyrics, however, are horrifically terrible. Of all the over-the-top silly Satan bullshit songs in metal, this has got to be one of the worst in terms of lackluster lyrical content. I won't even bother to quote 'em here—look 'em up on Encyclopaedia Metallum if you're up for a laugh. I honestly never paid attention until I sat down to write about the track: "Holy shit, that's really what he's saying, huh?"

That breakdown, though! Hot damn!

  2. I occasionally check your site, but never had much time to read anything, or even less for commenting. Then you’ve became more and more active. I will try to check all other posts as well. I’m glad you are active again. :)
