Song of the Day: Kunst, “High Strung,” from Aggression Reduction Therapy (Self-Released, 2010)

Kunst was put together by former Helmet and Handsome guitarist Peter Mengede sometime after moving back to Australia in the early-2000's. Handsome fans should absolutely take note here, as Kunst's approach follows a very comparable style of post-hardcore/alternative rock—to the point where at least one track on their lone EP is musically recycled from one of Handsome's rarer tunes. (Coincidentally, Kunst bears some resemblance to Tom Capone's post-Handsome act, Instruction, as well.) "High Strung" especially would've been right at home on the Handsome full-length, with its balance of chugging heaviness, ringing dissonance, and big chorus.

I always wished this band would've done more, but I'm not even sure they're still active. (Probably not, since their website hasn't been updated in a little over two years.) That being said, you can still download Aggression Reduction Therapy from their website, so I'd recommend grabbing the tracks while you still can!

  1. Hi Andrew, thank for choosing Kunst (now El Gordo) as your song of the day. We’ve changed a bit over the years, the aggression reduction therapy didn’t work out, and have an albums and a half’s worth of tracks ready for mixing. Interesting to hear that there are Instruction similarities as I never got the chance to hear Tom’s band.
