Leeway “Desperate Measures” CD

Leeway - Desperate MeasuresOriginally I was gonna choose Leeway for one of those "Past Their Prime" posts (and I probably still will one day), since their last two records are notoriously hated by almost everyone who liked the first two (that's right, I kinda dig 'em all). But I was thinking... shit, when I did one of those posts about the Cro-Mags, there were actually people who had never heard the Cro-Mags before. That's bad news people. Bad fucking news. For real. And then it dawned on me that despite the fact that either "Born to Expire" or "Desperate Measures" pops up on the vast majority of "Top 10's of NYHC" lists, there are just massive amounts of people out there who've never fuckin' heard Leeway. And that's gotta stop, man. I can't hang with that.

Now, as is often the case, most people will probably tell you, "Oh, their debut's the best..." But no, uh-uh. Fuck that shit. Don't get me wrong, "Born to Expire" kicks ass ("Mark of the Squealer", anyone?), but "Desperate Measures" is killin' shit in every way from start to finish. This is another of my top 25 most played CD's of all time, and I still probably listen to this shit at least once a month to this day. Every single track is a keeper (okay, I could do without "2-Minute Warning", but even that has its kitsch value), and it's hard as hell to try and single out a few songs as highlights. The fucker's just jam packed with classics. I'm telling you, I absolutely adore this record... I could gush about this album all damn day.

Released in 1991, I honestly don't have a problem stating that by this point in time the band was already more hardcore in history and spirit than they were on record, because there's very little "hardcore" about these tracks. Musically it's heavy as fuck and totally borders on being energetically delivered, rocked out thrash metal. Couple that with Eddie Sutton's inimitable singing style and there's never been another band that truly sounds like Leeway. But these songs in particular are just impeccable examples of thick, crunchy riffs scattered all over the place amidst powerfully memorable (if not catchy) song structures and ample levels of tasteful melody. Unless you're a strict hardcore purist, you've gotta be insane not to be all over these jams.

Unfortunately, I don't really know all that much about Leeway beyond cursory facts. I've been told that they never really officially broke up, and have kind of occasionally kicked around doing little "reunions" here and there, but there's really just a severe lack of information about these guys out there altogether—be it regarding their history, what happened afterwards, etc. After Leeway's final record guitarist A.J. Novello and drummer Pokey did time in Both Worlds with John Joseph from the Cro-Mags; with Novello also doing a stint in Breakdown, whereas Pokey and Sutton both joined Merauder (though Sutton never recorded more than a demo with the band). I'm sure there are other little tidbits such as these floating around, but that's all that's coming to mind right now.

Criminally enough, even though you can get used copies of the band's final two records for less than a buck at many online retailers, their first two discs are way out of print (as is the 2-on-1 CD reissue that came out almost 10 years ago), which causes me great pain and is a severe, severe injustice. If I had to I'd easily pay $25 for a copy of this disc, if not more, which you may have to do if you want a copy, but... keep searchin' eBay and maybe you'll get lucky. Man, what a cryin' shame that such an insanely badass record has become so hard to grab. Fuck...

  1. Those songs sound fuckin awesome.. i’d never heard any of the Desperate Measures material.. i do however know Born To Expire and Open Mouth Kiss, and although they are very different, they’re awesome records. Thanks for the post. You can still find Desperate Measures CD’s on Amazon’s new & used; a copy will cost you about $20.. i’m gonna try my luck and find it on vinyl.

  2. I saw Leeway in Lynn, Ma with Shutdown and The Hoods about 6 or 7 years ago. Solid Performance. Played all the classics.

  3. leeway rules.  they kinda refuse to do shows now, cause not too many kids came to see them the last time they played in 2001 or so.  but i bet if they played now theyd get a better turnout.

and open mouth kiss rules. hornets nest is one of leeways best songs.

  4. i’m not too much into 80s metal, but i have to say that i’m totally ashamed of haven’t listened to this before…besides the cro-mags, sheer terror and a very few more is fuckin’ hard to find out in spain new york’s crossover and thrash metal since it has never been properly distributed(or not distributed at all) and it has always been kind of “censored” stuff because of its politically incorrect points of view…people sometimes don’t have sense of humor enough and don’t even try to understand the background of all of this bands…

  5. Their Born To Expire album got me into hardcore… Leeway is the fuckin shit! And yeah, all their albums are great, they just managed to pull off different sounds each and every time and pull ‘em off really well. And yeah, they don’t nearly get the props they should. Glad I got to see ‘em live in Europe a bunch of times. One of the best bands ever.

  6. I love Leeway… But I have to confess to being one of those people who thinks “Born To Expire” is their best effort. Not that the others aren’t great themselves (I like them all), but that one is just pure crossover perfection in all its glory.

Yeah, guess Cities didn’t go over so well, eh? Haha… Fuck ‘em, I liked it.

  7. If he says something Andrew will get a fair ammount of post’s. If he doesn’t say anything he won’t. I wouldn’t take a low count of post as a bad sign. Fuck I don’t post most of the time cause I don’t have much to say input wise…I doubt he want’s post like “This shit rocks” or “This shit sucks.” Valuable imput matters shit like that doesn’t.

  8. This shit sucks!

Eh, just kidding. Another great pick, as little as I admittedly know about this band. I think I actually owned that double CD at one point and never listened to it very much. But I like what I’m hearing much more than I remember; I’ll have to get a hold of their records again.

  9. Might have some look finding this band on soulseek, the file sharing software. Leeway sounds pretty good. For some bizarre reason it reminds me of Sacred Love by Bad Brains.

  10. Santa Sangre played with Leeway in 2000, I think, at one of the few reunion shows they did. Needless to say, they were amazing. Some of the best and most innovative riffing to come from the NYHC scene. Though the Anthrax comparisons usually turn people off, I think Leeway crafted a sound of their own, far away from Anthrax’s. Easily one of the best assets to the NYHC catalog.

  11. Man, how I LOVED this band. I was always into more melodic handcore/emo stuff, so it took a really fucking amazing metal band to trip my trigger…these guys did exactly that.

Me and all my friends went to see Bad Brains on the Quickness tour (‘88? ‘89?) and these guys were on the bill as well. None of us had heard them, but we had heard they were pretty good. The show was at the Phantasy Theater in Cleveland—the place was fucking PACKED and it had to easily be 100+ degrees in the place. After the first band cleared out, it seemed like forever before there were any signs of life onstage. After about 45 minutes of nothing happening, people were getting really bent out of shape, what with the heat and all. Somebody finally came out and said Leeway hadn’t made it yet and that Bad Brains would be out shortly.

Bad Brains’ crew staring setting up their shit, when all of the sudden Leeway shows up. They literally threw their gear on stage, and while they doing so, it seemed like everyone in the crowd was saying the same thing: “These guys better be FUCKING GOOD.”

Leeway were completely set up in about fifteen minutes,  and Eddie started the show by grabbing the mic and saying something like “Fuck the PA turnpike!” Which got a good laugh out of me and my friends, being from PA and all. And with that, they proceeded to tear that place a new asshole. Eddie did one of the funnier things I had ever seen a frontguy do… there was this poor schlub right up front, just smashed into the chest-high stage. The kid was kind of half-bent over the stage, and Eddie took a running jump grabbed the kid’s head between his knees, then did this violent side-to-side shimmy, just flailing the kid around.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that everyone else there was blown away by them…I know me and my friends were. We went to see Bad Brains, but it was Leeway we were just going going on and on about when we drove home that night. By the time the tour rolled around to Pittsburgh a few weeks later, we were front and center for them, having already entirely memorized “Born to Expire” at that point.

  12. Hey Buske, yeah Santa Sangre did play with LEEWAY in Albany (santa sangre, leeway, buried alive, stigmata) but you were sidelined (broken wrist/arm)!  I got to play bass for Santa Sangre at that show as you sat out with your cast on!

  13. Hey everyone…..Leeway IS coming back…..Eddie Sutton is currently working on a new licensing deal (that will give the band better distribution), and will be playing again in 2006.

They never had a website, but all of that is changing now.Keep an eye out for a blogger/site that’s just started, and a better website is in the works.

You can also be glad to hear they will be recording/releasing a LIVE-CD that will be recorded in NYC at a future show.

Eddie Sutton is also working on a new DVD series called “Eddie Leeway’s Haunted Hardcore” and will feature Leeway consisting of 2-live shows and MP3 format as well. Other bands are to follow…..

If anyone is curious, Eddie has become a historian on ORGANIZED CRIME in New York. He has a walk-tour in New York City that has become one of the most exclusive walk/talk tours New York City has to offer, and maintains a relationship with some of the former REAL wiseguys that became famous from movies like “Goodfellas” and “Donnie Brasco”.

YUP, Leeway’s about to ‘stir the shit’ in way’s no one has ever thought of…......

    you can actually reach Eddie by email;

  14. Yo, Leeway is the shit. And it pisses me off that they didn’t get the recognition that they deserve.I saw Leeway at least a dozen times in N.Y.C and Brooklyn. They were the first hardcore band I seen “live”. It was in 1989, at L’amours in Brooklyn. The line-up was White Zombie, Leeway, and Suicidal Tendencies. (In that order). I saw them at the (now closed) Marquee in Manhattan with Mucky Pup, Burn, Life of Agony (when they were still good) and Biohazard. And I’ll never forget the show at the Palladium in N.Y. when they played with Murphy’s Law, Lunachicks, Nuclear Assault and a few other bands I can’t remember, but Agnostic Front headlined and the show ended in a full blown riot! Skins and hardcore kids (about 5000 of them) Vs. about 50 bouncers. But anyway, enough babbling, I hope Leeway comes back strong and finally gets recognized like they should. If and when they start playing shows again…I’ll be there…No doubt about it.
