Song of the Day: Mad Dog, “Johnny Cyclops,” from Mad Dog (Stud, 1987)

I know absolutely nothing about this UK band that released but one self-titled full-length in 1987. Even Encyclopaedia Metallum's got squat on the band or its members. I discovered the album while browsing some random blog full of obscure/out of print goodies, and the band name combined with the album cover immediately had me saying, "Yes, I do believe I must hear this."

As a whole it's not the greatest album on earth, but it certainly has its moments with fast-paced ragers like "Chill Out." The simple structure and killer riffs of "Johnny Cyclops" jump right out, too—a fine example of Mad Dog's NWOBHM melodicism passing through a gruff filter of Motörhead via Beowülf.
