Song of the Day: Mightyfew, “Both Shoulders,” from Cinema (Rage of Achilles, 2002)

I've written about the sorely underrated Australian act Mightyfew more than once, and I'll probably do so again. It bugs the shit out of me when great bands go so unnoticed, and Mightyfew isn't even listed at Discogs.com, so I guess I'll continue encouraging people to give 'em a chance!

The band released a couple of brief demos and a self-titled EP in the late-'90s—which were in more of a straight up nu-metal direction—before issuing two excellent EPs in the 2000s and eventually fading into obscurity.

"Both Shoulders" is the lead track from their second EP, Cinema— which was recorded in 2000 and later released in 2002 by the Rage of Achilles label—and remains one of my favorites. There's a pretty hefty Deftones comparison to be made here, and the heaving swells of hard-hitting yet melodic chord progressions carry a real sense of emotion. This track in particular is somewhat hypnotic in its effective use of repetition, and always strikes the right nerve with me.
