I recently got an email announcing the video for this track from Little Rock, AR trio Mothwind's debut full-length. I had never heard of the band, but it caught me at the right moment, so I gave it a click. The tune gets off to a little bit of a slow start with its light, choppy distortion, but I'm glad I stuck with it, 'cause once everything builds up with the melodic pulses of bass and those vocals kick in, I'm sold on the spot.
There's a touch of a "stoner rock" aesthetic happening, but I wouldn't really go there (at least for this track): it's just good, solid, heavy rock... that just so happens to boast excellent, excellent vocals. I love 'em. Fuckin' fantastic, emphatic singing with a great feel—totally natural, totally awesome. In combination with those galloping chugs and circular, ringing dissonant runs (especially during the chorus), the end result really hits the spot.
To be totally honest, I haven't had time to give the entire album a spin just yet, but I have played this track quite a few times on its own, so I'll be quite curious to sit down with the full album sometime in the next week or two.
Hot damn, those vocals are good...
