When I posted about Dmize awhile back all of the comments that came in got me digging around and I was actually able to track down a demo and a live set from Occupied Territory, who was cited in those comments as having truly been the first DMS band, a few years prior to Dmize. The band was fairly short-lived (I'd estimate somewhere within the span of 1986—1988 based on what facts I've acquired, but I'm not entirely sure of a specific timeframe) and recorded three demos, none of which were widely circulated, and two of which weren't technically "released" at all. The first demo was recorded boombox-in-a-basement style and was basically only distributed through friends, while the third and final demo was completely unreleased. The second demo, from 1987, was called "A Start", and that's what I was able to track down, though I don't know any recording details. I spent hours splicing this into separate tracks and cleaning them up as best I could (and that all goes for the live tracks as well, which actually seem slightly more balanced), but it's still quite raw. Hey, what can you do, you know? (Note: I took all of the song titles from the live set, so the opening demo track, "Intro", may be improperly titled. Edit: The song titles below are correct, though both the demo and live set mp3 tags will need minor corrections if you're as picky as I am!
1. "Intro"
2. "Number 1"
3. "We Ain't Complaining (N.Y.C.H.C.K.)"
4. "Peace One Day"
5. "Things That Are Real"
6. "Grandma's Angry Garage"
7. "Nothin' But Lies"
8. "Babylon"
The live set was recorded on WNYU radio, and I'm guessing it was sometime in 1988 since the band sends shout outs to Raw Deal and Outburst before the second track ("Number 1"). I believe Outburst started in 1987 and Raw Deal started in 1988, though it's possible that this was before Raw Deal had recorded their demo, so there's a chance the live set could be from sometime in 1987 as well. Again, I'm not entirely sure. In that same segment of the set, vocalist Eddie Mergan (aka Gyro, who also sang on the "A Start" demo above and was the band's second frontman) mentions "the crew at 145", which is an early reference to what became the DMS crew, as 145 refers to the school park at IS145 in Jackson Heights, NY where they would all hang out at the time.
1. "Peace One Day"
2. "Number 1"
3. "Nothin' But Lies"
4. "We Ain't Complaining (N.Y.C.H.C.K.)"
5. "Babylon"
6. "Things That Are Real"
7. "Grandma's Angry Garage"
8. "Eightball"
9. "Blunt"
Apparently most of the former members of Occupied Territory have been relatively hard to come by since the late-80's, so I don't think they were involved in any other bands afterwards.
I don't know the name of the kid who hooked me up with these tracks, but many thanks to him for helping me out, and thanks to Al DMS for taking the time to hit me with some background information. If anyone by any chance in hell has the cover art for this demo and can send me a scan, please let me know. Thanks. Edit: Huge thanks to Hilary Neloms for the cover scan!
Enjoy... I'm not posting again until Monday because I just threw over 30 minutes of music up here and I don't want my bandwidth to absolutely die!

Awesome! Totally the kind of unobtanium/obscurata I hit this site for. The fact you got Al to bless it and give you background info was over the top. More of this kind of stuff please!

where did you get the TripHammer Remasters CD d00d??!?!?!
4.20.2006 | By jesse
Jesse, contact Triphammer on MySpace. It’s a pro-pressed CD-R so it’s overpriced considering, but the songs are absolutely fucking awesome and I’m bummed the band never got signed to do more at that time period. The first track on their ‘92 demo is literally astounding. Some of the stuff reminds me of Forbidden a little bit, and you can’t lose there…

I grew up in the same neighborhood as these dudes. Most of the guys in D.M.S. went to Newtown and Bryant High Schools. DMIZE will always be the main band of this era and certainly in the world of D.M.S. I remember getting demo/rehearsal tapes from guys like Danny (from a death metal band called MASTEMA) and Adolph around 1988 and dubbing it for people all over the world.
Other bands from the era and area you should look up are:
FIT OF ANGER
CONSPIRACY
FACE THE FACTS
I wish it were 1989 again!!!

I can’t download the 2nd track of the live… It seems that the file is missing or something… could you fix it?
4.29.2006 | By [email protected]
It’s fixed. I must have accidentally deleted it last week. I can’t believe the most important track was missing and it took a few days for someone to let me know! Many thanks…

OT was
Gyro- Vox
Ed- Bass
Rodney- Drums
Can’t remember the name of the guitar player. I think there was another person on vox before Gyro. And a guy namred Mauricio the Liar was the original guitarist, but that might be a lie too. The NYU set was performed on Crucial Chaos in Early ‘88. The band just fell apart shortly after that.

^You talking about Maurico Sleestack? Sammy was also an early member. Gyro was not the original vocalist & the first incarnation of this band had nothing to do w/ DMS. The band was around before that acronym was coined. Anyhow, OT was originally based out of East NY & consisted of Latin dudes. The Jackson Heights/DMS connection came later. -Slappy

gyro was the second vocalist
mauricio was the second basist. ed the guy on the demo was third
slee
sammy
lou
rod
leo
the first incarnation of the band was from east ny section with lou being from flushing
mauricio was a bs artist who gt kicked out of the band the original singer and bassist moved to florida right after the first demo (not released) right after the nyu show they played i think 1 more show and they just drifted apart. i kept contact with lou for a while after but that faded as well. have not heard from any of them in 15+ years

Hey, I went to High School with Leo/Mauricio the liar & Alvarez (what’s up!) Glad to see OT getting some recognition. I remember hanging out with the first line-up,at Rod’s basement in East New York, boy was it ghetto! I also did the New Breed tape with Chaka Harris, if any old friends want to get in touch (especially people from my hood: Jackson Heights) or anyone else, drop me a line at: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

A blast from the past to say the least. Something recently crept into me and start searching about my past in Jackson Heights. OT. Let’s just say I lived it. Knew all of them VERY WELL. I remember the jam session with “gyro” and the rest of the boys. DMS, wow. Who would ever think that name would still be on the net. I haven’t spoken to anyone affiliated with OT or DMS in at least 15 years myself. It would be great to see if anyone has changed.

Glad to see this demo getting some play. I remember it and the members well. I always preferred the WNYU set to the actual demo. They both bring back great memories regardless. What’s up Jere? What’s up Freddy?

Hey it’s Leo… And back in 1983 I started to learn how to play the guitar. After my practices I would go over to Rodneys house and show him what I learned, which then he would gather up boxes, pots and pans, which is how OT got started… I use to sell **** and worked at Consumers in Queens Plaza… Saved up money and bought Rodney his first drum set ($100 Ludwig) from my old guitar teachers music shop… And after Rodney showed his parents his passion for playing the drums they bought him a beaut Yamaha Set. There originally was 5 of us (Oldest was Carlos (Marine), Paul (Mexican), Leo (PR), Victor (FROG) and the youngest was Rodney (PR))of us boys who all grew up in the same neighborhood (East NY) and did a lot together, as we got older and each went to a different High School, (Rod (St. Johns Prep), Leo (Aviation HS), Paul (Richmond Hill), Victor (private). You can say that was when OT started getting bigger with friends that just wanted to hang out and watch a band play. At Aviation H.S. I met the Lead guitarist Louis and hung out with Freddy Alva (what up!). Slee was the original singer, but never sang at any gigs… then Sammy was the one the sang at “the Pyramid” which I hustled Rabies from War Zone for weeks to get that gig and when he heard our demo tape I will never forget his reply “that band sounds like Bad Brains, when I heard him say that, I knew we were on the right track… But I moved right after that to Forida (1987) and to this day still keep up with Rodney, Louis, Mauricio, Freddy, Carlos, Paul, Stephanie, Antny, Science… and lets not ever forget my girl Adriana, aka AGE! I believe AGE had a lot to do with bringing Occupied Territory to Jackson Heights and when we meet everyone there, things just clicked and grewwwwwwww…. Thanks for bring me back to a great time in my life… Much Love! - Leo.
