Song of the Day: Roy Batty, “A Quality of Mercy” (Self-Released, 2017)

An old friend of mine mentioned Richmond, VA's Roy Batty—named after Rutger Hauer's character from Blade Runner—on Facebook yesterday, and I kinda flipped out upon checking out "A Quality of Mercy" for the first time.

As a whole, the band reminds me of some creatively angular and obscure, weird, "alternative" metal of the early-'90s, but given a deathrock-ishly dark and crusty punk edge filtered through a Voïvod-ian sensibility. That is to say: it's just fuckin' cool! Great songwriting utilizing interesting guitar riffs, actively roving bass lines, powerful drumming, and unique vocals that offer a range of emotional textures.

There are three fantastic tracks up on Bandcamp so far, and I'm really looking forward to hearing more. These folks are really onto something nice here...
