Song of the Day: Shinobi, “Locked and Loaded,” from Demo (Self-Released, 2016)

Edit: Shinobi's old demo has since been deleted from Bandcamp, so the above is a newer track than the one discussed below.

Elements of the cover art may suggest otherwise, but Philadelphia duo Shinobi (featuring members of the previously gushed about Chinatown) cranks out super raw, stripped down, and relatively simple grunge rock tunes—sort of like if you mashed up all three Nirvana records, sprinkled on a dash of Jawbreaker-ish vocalizations, and produced it in the style of Guided by Voices' most lo-fi outings.

As with Chinatown, this a fairly self-contained and D.I.Y. affair, and the fact that this material is so different further demonstrates that these dudes really have some cool ideas goin' on. As a two-piece, they're currently bass-free, so my only suggestion would be to add bass. The songs are great, and I'm totally down with the rugged aesthetic, but damn might some basslines thicken these jams up wonderfully!

Grab all three tracks as a name your price download via Bandcamp. Hopefully the group's in-house methods will allow them the freedom to continue growing and exploring with additional output sooner rather than later...
