Song of the Day: The Almighty, “Addiction,” from Powertrippin' (Polydor, 1993)

This is the opening track on the third album from Glasgow, Scotland's The Almighty. I was probably about 15 or 16 when I first heard this song via its video during one of many late-night Headbangers Ball viewing sessions. Dark, mean-looking video (at least to a teenager)? Check. Ridiculously catchy chorus? Check. So I bought the album and became a fan.

Then I got a little older, and for some strange reason decided it was "uncool" to listen to this sort of thing, so I sold it off and thought nothing of it. But a funny thing happened over the 10+ years that followed: This song, "Addiction," would still get stuck in my head from time to time, and I vividly remembered that damn chorus like it was yesterday.

So, older still, I realized I was an idiot, and should listen to whatever the fuck I want, and now I'm a fan again.

Come to think of it, there are a couple of other albums from The Almighty still missing from my collection. It might be time to start filling the gaps.

  1. For some reason, all I can think of when I hear this is the stuff Headbanger’s Ball would play when they first started mixing in grunge type non-metal on the show.  What a clusterfuck period of time that was.
