I've never known much about The God Machine. Too dark and (at least figuratively) heavy to simply be "alternative rock," but certainly not metal, I've owned their 1992 full-length debut, Scenes From the Second Storey, for many years. It's quite good, so I always intended to follow-up on the rest of their discography, but never got around to it until last month when they came up in conversation.
Within seconds, this track from their sophomore and final album, One Last Laugh in a Place of Dying..., completely destroyed me and instantly became my all-time favorite of their songs. A little bit more straightforward, emotionally and musically immediate, and catchy than the bulk of their output, "Painless" strikes a nerve right off the bat. And, damn, those lyrics:
And you said life could be painless.
I'm sorry, but... that's not what I've found...
Yep. That's my sweet spot right there. I just can't get enough of this track...
